The best compact laptops of 2022

ASUS Vivobook Pro 14 OLED

Open our ranking of the best laptops of 2022 ASUS Vivobook Pro 14 OLED. At the moment, these laptops really have in stock what you can and should brag about. With dimensions almost familiar to 13-inch models and a weight of 1.45 kg, they are equipped with the latest processors (up to i7-12700H and AMD Ryzen 7 6800H), video cards up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050. The amount of RAM is 16 GB DDR5. Unfortunately, for the sake of compactness, it had to be soldered on the board: the upgrade possibilities here are minimal, but this has long been familiar from compact laptops.

But the most «delicious» here, perhaps, is the display — it is assembled on the «Samsung» OLED-matrix with a resolution of 2880×1800, which has a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a response time of 0.2 ms. Moreover, the screens of these laptops already meet professional standards, having Display HDR True Black 600 and Pantone Validated certification. As a result, we get a comfortable and light laptop with fast hardware and simply excellent image quality, on which you can solve professional tasks in typography, graphic data processing and so on. Another thing is that for such tasks it is still desirable to have a larger screen.

The drive in the «Intel» version has no alternative so far — 512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0. But with AMD processors, you can get twice as much volume. However, the drive here is removable, and with more or less normal access (although a Torx screwdriver is needed).

Wireless capabilities are also made according to the modern standard: Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) 2×2 + Bluetooth 5.2. There are not so many connectors — again, retribution for compactness. But at least on the line with AMD processors there is USB 4.0 Gen3 Type-C, but on Intel laptops it has been replaced by Thunderbolt 4.

The keyboard is membrane, with a fairly adequate layout, which is also not so common on compact laptops. It is complemented by a branded touchpad, which can also work as an additional numeric keypad.

The battery is 63 Wh, with a total heat pack of the device of 60 W in Performance mode (for assembly on AMD), the top-end configuration under load cannot boast of autonomy, but this is again a proprietary “disease” of all compact models if they are not assembled on the hardware level of a mobile phone. With moderate loads, you still don’t have to “live” next to the outlet.

Main advantages:

  • Performance
  • Excellent high resolution screen
  • Moderate cooling noise
Minuses:
  • Not the best autonomy
  • Not enough connectors

After this screen (after all, Samsung knows how to make OLED better than anyone else), you don’t even want to look at ordinary IPS.

HUAWEI MateBook D 14

This year, the Chinese decided not to update their “compact”, although, having appeared in 2020, this line has already received an update in 2021. Which is logical: there are no “Intel” configurations on the official website now, and the transition from “five-thousandth” to “six-thousandth” Ryzen is more of an “update for updating”. But be that as it may, we have a very interesting model.

The 1.39-pound aluminum laptop is now equipped with AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processors and 8 GB of DDR4 memory — not bad for a «compact» by today’s standards. The laptop will swallow typical tasks of such technology with a bang. The drive is a 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD. The battery is 56 Wh, taking into account the moderate power consumption of the system, we get good autonomy: a normal working day or more than 7 hours of video viewing will be enough. Charging goes through the type-C port, which supports current transfer in the opposite direction when turned off.

The screen is assembled on an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 14 inches and FullHD resolution. There’s really nothing to complain about in it. TÜV Rheinland Low Bluelight certification — available, it does not «eat» eyes. The only thing lacking brightness is outdoors under the sun, which isn’t the best idea for using a laptop in general.

The keyboard is comfortable and backlit. A fingerprint scanner is built into the power button, and there is a proprietary feature in the row of function keys — there is a rising webcam hidden between F6 and F7, disguised as a regular key. To raise it, this “key” must be pressed. The decision is not for everyone — especially if you often use the F-series, then your fingers will fall on the camera instead of the desired button for a long time.

Another proprietary feature is the ability to project the screen onto a connected smartphone or tablet, which will, if necessary, get rid of the main disadvantage of compact laptops: small space on the screen. Naturally, the mobile device must also be from Huawei. Have we already seen this somewhere? Yeah, Huawei, following the example of Apple, is slowly riveting its ecosystem.

Main advantages:

  • Light weight with metal body
  • Comfortable keyboard
  • Decent autonomy
  • Decent performance
Minuses:
  • Dim keyboard backlight
  • Few connectors

Although. Of course, in purely Chinese there are references to the «Macbook» up to the similarity in the name — but, to be honest, I have enough of the «Chinese» for my eyes.

The best gaming laptops of 2022

ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15

When choosing the leader in the category of the best gaming laptops of 2022, we decided not to climb into the distance (of course, there are more sophisticated gaming laptops, but their price is already approaching the cast-iron drawbridge), and settled on this line. The 15.6-inch ROG Strix Scar isn’t cheap either, but it has more than some serious gaming stuff — in the CES 2022 lineup, the top version now has an Intel Core i9-12900H processor (24MB cache, up to 5, 0 GHz, 14 cores: 6 high performance and 8 energy efficient), NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card with a power limit of 150 W and 16 GB GDDR5, up to 64 gigabytes of DDR5-4800 RAM and a terabyte M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD.

The screen is quite tasty — with a resolution of 2560×1440, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, a frequency of 240 Hz and a response time of 3 ms. Supports adaptive sync. You can also sacrifice resolution in favor of an even higher frame rate — in the FullHD version, it already «pulls» all 300 Hz.

Cooling system — with two large fans, «liquid metal» is used as a thermal interface. The temperature regime under load is still close to the boiler, as is always the case with «gaming» models — but at the same time, cooling does not even bring the fans to full speed, and «turbo mode», when they howl like a Jericho pipe, knocks down only a few degrees in games.

Sound subsystem — with component (!) acoustics, supporting Hi-Res Audio. Of course, it cannot be compared with a high-quality external one — but by laptop standards, it’s even nothing.

The battery is 90 Ah, so with moderate loads it lasts for a decent time. In games, any «gaming» laptop is still forced to be tied to a power supply — here it is 280 W, with a type-C interface and support for fast charging.

Main advantages:

  • Fast and high quality IPS screen
  • High performance hardware
  • «Liquid metal», not thermal paste, in cooling
Minuses:
  • Traditional, in general, for game models

Games at high graphics settings pull decently. But, the truth is, you can’t move away from the outlet for a long time already.

MSI GS66

In general, of course, in the GS66 Stealth series of laptops, the latest in which is the 2022 GS66-12U line on Intel 12th generation processors, the manufacturer decided to cross something with something: these laptops are presented as “combining gaming and business -functions». However, the branded dragon on a metal case and the multi-colored backlighting of the keyboard from SteelSeries are not very suitable for a business laptop, and the simplest video card in the series is the GeForce RTX 3070Ti. So let’s write down the laptop after all in the gaming ones.

There are only two options for choosing a processor: i9-12900H or i7-12700H. Memory — 32 or 64 GB DDR5. As a drive, a 1 or 2 TB SSD is used.

Displays — 15.6 «UHD (3840×2160), on an IPS-matrix. Available with 240 Hz scan support, but only with a resolution of 2560×1440.

Another typically gaming «chip» is Killer network controllers. The Killer Gb LAN chip up to 2.5 Gb / s is responsible for the LAN connection, the wireless connection is provided by Intel Killer AX Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.2.

But what a laptop is good for is its battery: lithium-polymer cells at 99.9 Wh already allow us to talk about autonomy at high loads. Although, of course, a 240-watt power supply should not be put off far.

But all this «iron» needs to be cooled — and here the main minus comes out: a three-fan cooling system in a thin case cannot but make noise. Of course, but with a weight of just over 2 kg, the laptop received good “portability”, but the sound …

Main advantages:

  • Screen quality
  • Battery capacity
  • Gaming performance
Minuses:
  • Edge-to-edge cooling

I took it, oddly enough, not for games, but for «heavy» tasks in 3D modeling at work. Still, a powerful processor, a good video card and a high-quality screen are also very necessary for this.

The best convertible laptops of 2022

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED

Still, whatever one may say, it was the commonwealth of ASUS and Samsung that “shot” this year. ASUS’ latest «transformer» is not only 12th generation Intel processors and iF Design Award 2022, but also excellent OLED displays from Samsung — up to 3840X2400 resolution, 100% DCI-P3 range coverage, up to 550cd/m² brightness, Pantone certified Verified, response — 0.2 ms. And yes, we are still talking about a compact convertible laptop with a 14-inch screen that weighs only 1.4 kg.

There are 2 processors to choose from in the Russian catalog: Intel Core i5-12500H 2.5 GHz (18 MB cache, up to 4.5 GHz, 4P + 8E cores), Intel Core i7-12700H 2.3 GHz (24 MB cache — memory, up to 4.7GHz, 6P+8E cores). Here the RAM, unfortunately, is soldered on the board — it is either 8 or 16 GB, so upgrading it is still magic for the master of the blow dryer, that is, for the average user — it is unrealistic. There is no discrete graphics card.

Let’s add at the same time that the mechanical «indestructibility» of the laptop is certified under the terms of the US MIL-STD 810H standard. Power supply — via the type-C connector, battery capacity — 63 W * h. There are few connectors — only one USB Type-A (supporting USB 3.2 Gen2), one HDMI 2.0b, but for some reason there are already two Thunderbolt 4.

Main advantages:

  • Great choice of processors
  • Samsung Professional Quality OLED Display
  • Good build quality
  • Portability
Minuses:
  • Only one USB-A connector: if a wireless mouse dongle or a wired cable takes it, then …

HP EliteBook x360 1040

This year, the ninth generation (G9) is already entering the market, although only last year’s G8 is still available in stores. Well, let’s kill two birds with one stone and compare what you can get right now with Hewlett-Packard’s latest business transformer.

The processors are now 12 generations from Intel, up to the i7-1265U. Accordingly, the RAM is already DDR5, with dual-channel 64 GB in the top configuration. 14-inch «I twist it as I want» screen — with a resolution of 1920×1200 and a brightness of up to 1000 nits (three options in the catalog), with a touchscreen. Graphics — Embedded processor subsystem only, Intel Iris Xe.

The case is still the same thin and light, thanks to the use of magnesium alloy, it is also durable at the same time. The lightest configuration weighs less than a kilogram. The G8 had a «starting» weight of 1.32 kg.

Optionally, the «transformer» can be equipped with a module for connecting to LTE mobile networks. Another option is NFC support.

Main advantages:

  • Modern «iron»
  • Excellent mobility
  • Choice of configurations and options
  • Advanced wireless capabilities
Minuses:
  • Minimum upgrade options
  • Wireless internet connection only

An «always with you» laptop — durable and very light, while not slow. It is convenient to work even in “classic” mode, even in tablet mode.

The best high-performance laptops of 2022

ASUS Zenbook Pro 17

Our rating of the best laptops ASUS Zenbook Pro 17 continues. Another novelty of this year from ASUS, which won the Reddot Award 2022, has expanded the Zenbook Pro professional line and is already presented in the Russian catalog of the company. Finally, there is now a 17.3-inch model — so far only on AMD processors, up to the Ryzen 9 6900HX, which is supplemented with 32 GB LPDDR5-6400. And this allows you not to be afraid for the lack of computing performance. The top-end graphics card is the GeForce RTX 3050.

The 1440p touchscreen supports 100% DCI-P3 coverage and is Pantone Validated so it can be used in professional environments where color range and color accuracy are critical. The sweep frequency is 165 Hz.

With a laptop weight of 2.2 kg, it is quite mobile, and a 76 watt-hour battery gives good battery life. The manufacturer claims compliance with the military standard MIL-STD-810H — and this, for example, is the ability to withstand freezing from -25 ° C to -33 ° C for 7 cycles of 24 hours.

The keyboard is relatively long-stroke and comfortable. The large touchpad allows you to work with it without really looking up from the keyboard — with some skill, transferring your thumbs to it, you can continue to type with the rest at the same time.

4 Harman Kardon speakers and a high-quality sound path with an «intelligent» amplifier give the laptop a quite pleasant sound.

Main advantages:

  • State-of-the-art high-performance, energy-efficient hardware
  • Professional display
  • Good mobility
Minuses:
  • Noisy cooling system (even according to the manufacturer — up to 40 dB, but usually in practice it turns out to be more)

Well done, no doubt. The screen was calibrated without problems, so I work calmly with graphics for printing.

The best budget laptops of 2022

Lenovo V15-IGL

Here in the budget segment, alas, one should not expect serious innovations: new technologies do not reach here, “iron” has to be taken not from the freshest. Therefore, it makes no sense to choose something from the new products, and a huge number of laptops, in fact, all look the same.

The V15-IGL in the current top-end configuration has only slightly exceeded the “budget threshold” that we originally intended, and the simpler ones, still available in many stores, will fit into it just fine. The 82C30023RU version is assembled on the Intel Pentium N5030 processor, which is far from new, but is in no hurry to leave the lower market segment. RAM — 4 GB, a 256 GB SSD is available as a drive. A 2.5-inch drive bay is provided, so there is room for an upgrade. The video subsystem is just an «embedding» of the processor.

Given that there is nothing special to consume energy, the battery is modest — at 35 Wh. With a processor TDP of 6 W, the brightness of the screen, in fact, affects autonomy more. The screen itself is simple, on a TN-matrix, and absolutely unremarkable.

Main advantages:

  • Rather, it should be said — «there are no critical cons»
Minuses:
  • Soldered on-board memory
