Best SATA 2.5″ SSDs

Samsung 870 EVO SATA 2.5″ SSD

Opening our ranking of the best SSDs is a top SSD for upgrading laptops that don’t have M.2 SSD slots. Of course, such rare laptops must have a SATA III port. Plus the ability to update the BIOS, if it is supposed to install an operating system on the disk. Expensive, but this is the maximum in terms of speed characteristics for an interface with a single command queue and a «pad» in the form of a hardware controller. The predecessor of this model was in great demand, Samsung 870 EVO has become even more interesting. If you can no longer expect an increase in the linear exchange rate through the SATA interface, the «ceiling» has been reached, then it is quite possible to increase the performance of an SSD of the type in question with small-block random reading or with a mixed load, which was proved by South Korean experts. Please note that the new Samsung 870 QVO family has much more modest potential. And both in terms of speed indicators, and in terms of durability.

Main advantages:

  • best performance among SATA drives;
  • the best-selling SSD series;
  • 5 years warranty.
Minuses:
  • costs significantly more than competitors.
Models in the line:
  • Samsung 870 EVO SATA 2.5″ SSD

Crucial MX500

It is quite common practice for manufacturers of solid state drives to change the hardware stuffing in models that are already on the market without advertising. Some of the “edits” being made are caused by an objective necessity, for example, the transition to memory chips made using more advanced technology, but in many cases there is a clear desire of companies to save money, which worsens the consumer qualities of disks. Mercantile considerations are not alien to the leadership of Crusial, but there is a nuance. At one time, their budget line BX500 fundamentally differed from the recommended MX500 only by the lack of a buffer. At the time of writing the review, the first one was “improved” with the help of QLC type memory, while the second received 96-layer TLC instead of 64-layer. As a result, when copying large volumes, the modern version of the BX500 noticeably sags in the speed of linear recording and small-block reading.

Main advantages:

  • decent performance (for SATA SSD);
  • stable hardware platform.
Minuses:
  • the declared resource is lower than that of competitors;
  • strong enough heat.

  • Crucial MX500

Western Digital WD BLUE 3D NAND SATA SSD 2.5″

From the moment SanDisk came under the control of Western Digital, «WD» hard drives have been able to take a considerable share of the market. Including its budget segment, and the “budget” of WD Blue is immediately noticeable by the characteristics of the “stuffing”.

The controller used in this SSD is already well known to us — this is the good old Marvell 88SS1074, which has long been known for inexpensive solutions from the same Crucial or Kingston. In this drive, it is paired with 256 MB LDDR3-1866 RAM, the main disk space is 64-layer BiCS3 3D TLC NAND. The drive has a warranty resource of one hundred terabytes of recording, which, in general, has already crossed the threshold of obsolescence: under normal use (and it is unlikely that a budget 250-gigabyte drive will be bought for constant work with large data arrays), the user will upgrade the system faster than he can «Kill» a working SSD with a write.

True, it is worth remembering that this particular model failed in the 3DNews test, in which it withstood only 84 TBW out of the prescribed hundred, and this despite the fact that its cheaper «brother» WD Green was able to stretch more than three hundred. Of course, for a “home” drive, 84 TBW is decent (the author was not too lazy to check his own SSD — 14 TBW for two and a half years of work), and you can’t extrapolate the results of a particular drive to the entire series … but still, we’ll point this out. After 50 TBW, it probably makes sense to look at SMART to see how Reallocated Sectors Count is doing.

Main advantages:

  • Good real speed performance at an affordable price
  • Moderate heating during active operation
  • Five-year manufacturer’s warranty
Minuses:
  • Despite the lack of information about some statistically significant cases of failure up to the prescribed 100 TBW, there is still a somewhat unpleasant aftertaste.
Models in the line:
  • Western Digital WD BLUE 3D NAND SATA SSD 2.5″

    — WDS250G2B0A, 250 GB capacity

  • Western Digital WD BLUE 3D NAND SATA SSD 500 GB (WDS500G2B0A)

Best SATA M.2 SSDs

Samsung 860 EVO SATA M.2

When upgrading slightly outdated laptops, it is far from always acceptable to use the most modern components. If at one time you were not lucky enough to get a laptop model with an SSD connector in the M.2 form factor, but with a SATA interface, you will have to choose a replacement from a very modest list of suitable solid state drives. The best (but also most expensive) SSDs in this category are undoubtedly Samsung’s offerings. Firstly, they are preferable due to the company’s own component base, which allows us to count on the stability of characteristics. Secondly, thanks to TurboWrite technology and Rapid mode, which significantly improve the performance of drives when writing large amounts of data and many small files, respectively. With a low queue depth, as a rule, SSDs of this brand outperform direct competitors (this scenario is typical for the vast majority of user tasks). Under heavy load, the 860 EVO is by far the coolest.

Main advantages:

  • best performance in this class of drives in general;
  • has no direct competitors in high load scenarios;
  • weak heating.
Minuses:
  • the declared resource is not impressive;
  • niche solution;
  • expensive.
Models in the line:

Western Digital WD Blue SATA SSD M.2

As we have already noted, for the average user, the optimal size of a solid state drive is now 500 gigabytes. Using the example of the WD Blue SATA SSD M.2 line, we will justify this statement from a technical point of view. Like many other SSDs available, these drives use a pseudo-SLC cache, which allows them to maintain the declared write speed for some time. Not very large, but directly dependent on their volume. In the case under consideration, the speed drop begins after writing 2 GB for a 250 GB model, a little more than 3 GB for a 500th SSD, and about 14 GB for a terabyte. It would seem that the larger the storage capacity, the better. Alas, not always. More precisely, not in the budget segment with its abundance of «weak links». Specifically, this is an insufficiently powerful controller that controls the recording process (four-channel Marvell 88SS1074). Simply put, the larger the WD Blue SATA drive, the deeper the speed drops after the cache is full.

Main advantages:

  • decent performance in most cases;
  • five year warranty.
Minuses:
  • weak four-channel controller;
  • significant heating (up to throttling).
Models in the line:
  • Western Digital WD Blue SATA SSD M.2

Best Entry Level NVMe SSDs

Samsung 980 NVMe

There are only two classic features of entry-level NVMe drives. This is either the absence of a DRAM buffer, which affects a relative decrease in performance, or the use of four-bit QLC NAND memory, which implies less durability of the device and large delays (i.e., the speed potentially suffers, but this moment can be partly compensated by tricky tricks). Samsung decided to go the first way, although it insured itself with an increased pseudo-SLC dynamic cache. In principle, a promising option, but you need to take into account that with the filling of a drive of this type “to the eyeballs”, the speed drawdown increases many times. A kind of argument in favor of terabyte SSDs, which are also more productive due to chips of optimal capacity (better for organizing their parallel operation).

Main advantages:

  • best bufferless drive;
  • large dynamic pseudo-SLC cache.
Minuses:
  • increased sensitivity to occupancy;
  • significant heating of the controller.
Models in the line:
  • Samsung 980 NVMe

    — MZ-V8V500BW, 500GB capacity

Silicon Power UD70

Continuing our review of the best SSD drives 2021-2022 Silicon Power UD70. Silicon Power chose an alternative way to reduce the cost of NVMe drives and used chips with four-bit cells in the UD70 line. Yes, such memory is noticeably inferior to all its predecessors in the number of rewriting cycles, but for the average user with tasks such as surfing, social networking, watching videos or listening to music via the Internet, as well as with a rarely updated archive of all sorts of things, SSD based on 3D QLC NANS — this is really the best choice that allows you to do without an HDD and not overpay. Please note that the speeds declared by the manufacturer are achievable only in ideal conditions and for the older model. Judging by the reviews of the owners of the 500 GB drive, its performance is almost two times lower, although it still surpasses any SATA SSD records.

Main advantages:

  • faster than any SATA drive;
  • price in terms of volume.
Minuses:
  • low memory resource;
  • severe performance degradation when copying large volumes.

Best Mid-Range NVMe SSDs (PCIe Gen 3)

Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 SSD

This representative of the EVO family from Samsung has not received a new index: if earlier the “top” was 970 EVO, now it is 970 EVO Plus. What is this «plus»? Let’s see.

The controller here remained the same, but with a modified firmware, and the 64-layer TLC memory (fourth generation) was replaced by a 96-layer (fifth generation). In practice, this gave a decent improvement in the speed characteristics of an already excellent drive: for example, with sequential writing, the speed jumped by almost a third, from 2500 to 3300 megabytes per second, and with random reading and writing, the increase was 27 and 20 percent, respectively. The warranty is still 5 years with a maximum write capacity of 150 terabytes — to put it simply, you can overwrite a third of the drive’s capacity every day, which is hard to imagine.

Drive caching is two-level. The static cache has a fixed amount of 4 GB, the dynamic one can grow up to 9. In actual numbers, when writing a large amount of data, a 250 GB drive shows its peak speed up to 10 GB of write, after which the speed drops to about 480 MB / s — however, and this figure is more than impressive. At the same time, for more capacious models in the line, not only the speed limit threshold is shifted towards large volumes, but the drop itself is lower — for a 500-gigabyte model up to ~ 700 MB / s, and for a terabyte one — up to 1500 at all. Such speeds and “falling “I don’t really want to call it, to be honest. Only the flagship is faster — Samsung 970 PRO, but this is already completely different money. And this is not always the case — in some scenarios, the Evo is even able to be slightly faster if it does not go beyond the SLC cache!

The only pity is that the issue still remains with the temperature regime: with the Plus prefix, the 970 EVO is still demanding on cooling, especially with large recording volumes. When assembling or upgrading a computer, this moment must be taken into account — and for laptops, perhaps, it will still be more interesting, albeit a slower, but also “colder” M.2 NVMe SSD.

Main advantages:

  • Excellent speed characteristics, including after the exhaustion of the cache volume
  • Reliability
  • Decent warranty resource
Minuses:
  • Heat load
Models in the line:
  • Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 SSD

Crucial P5

Another line of solid state drives, clearly proving the inexpediency of acquiring a minimum capacity SSD. It is possible that over time the manufacturer upgrades the youngest version of the P5, but so far it is equipped with memory chips of a non-optimal configuration, which is why it demonstrates half the speed in linear recording and a significant lag behind the older representatives of the series in small-block operations. Unfortunately, the developers considered it unnecessary to use any additional cooling options (at least in the form of a copper sticker), therefore, under load, the drives in question heat up and start throttling. The saddest thing is that in order to restore normal speed, you need not stop copying for a while, but cancel it. Simply put, the Crucial P5 is worth buying if the motherboard has a regular heatsink for the SSD or airflow is provided for the solid state drive.

Main advantages:

  • excellent performance under moderate loads;
  • very low latency;
  • components only of own production, including the controller (Micron).
Minuses:
  • the 250 GB version is noticeably inferior in terms of speed to the older P5;
  • without additional cooling, it easily heats up under load;
  • to fully restore throughput, you need to restart the operation that was running.

Compared to competitors, it is significantly cheaper than the Samsung EVO 970 and a little bit cheaper than the WD Black 750, otherwise a normal SSD for the money. Especially if it is possible to add cooling.

Kingston KC2500

The next reviewed SSD drive is not particularly impressive with its speed characteristics, but it allows you not to bother with the cooling system during installation, if a high workload is not expected. For example, a laptop or computer is not planned to be used for video editing. Thanks to the brand programmers who optimized the Kingston KC2500 firmware in order to give the SSD controller more time to “rest”. Moreover, the pseudo-SLC cache size in these drives depends not only on the remaining space, but also on other factors. In particular, on the type of data being written. Again, we draw your attention to the more modest performance of the younger version. If for the KC2500 with volumes of 500 GB and above, the linear write speed is declared at 2900 MB / s, then the least capacious SSD of this series, in principle, is not able to overcome the “bar” at around 1200 MB / s due to the inability to fully realize the potential of the controller.

Main advantages:

  • advanced algorithms for dynamic cache allocation;
  • moderate heating (at medium loads).
Minuses:
  • not the best performance compared to direct competitors.
Models in the line:
  • Kingston KC2500

    — SKC2500M8/500G, 500GB capacity

ADATA XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro 256GB

And «gaming», and even «pro» … Marketing or a sign of real merit? For this SSD, sequential read / write speeds are declared at 3050/1200 MB / s, a 160-terabyte resource, and this is, in general, quite interesting.

The real speed characteristics of an SSD drive are good, but its weak point is also easily detected: when writing large amounts of data, the speed starts to sag, but when a considerable number of gigabytes are removed, the drive, all the more so, “presses the brake pedal”, it has too many resources takes away «internal service». For a system disk operating under heavy load, this is already fraught with serious friezes, which is unpleasant for a high-speed SSD, which is purchased to eliminate them. Moreover, in synthetic benchmarks, the drive is very good, but in some real scenarios it can show its not very pleasant side.

And what about the temperature regime? Here, external beauty is sacrificed for cooling efficiency: the drive is noticeably “hotter” than the same Patriot Memory VPN100. However, it is worth considering that its “playability” implies installation in a well-cooled case, so there should be no real problems with throttling in practice.

If you need an SSD specifically for fast system loading and «heavy» game levels, then ADATA will work for a solid «five». When working with large amounts of data, perhaps you should prefer a drive that is less fast “in absolute terms”, but more stable in speed and having a longer resource.

Main advantages:

  • Very attractive speed characteristics in most scenarios
  • Acceptable heat
Minuses:
  • Dislike for active work with large amounts of information

Silicon Power P34A80

In last place in the category of mass NVMe drives is another model based on the Phison E12 controller. Unlike the Patriot Memory Viper VPN100 discussed above, the alleged development of Silicon Power cannot boast of either a powerful heatsink or circuitry features. Allegedly, because Phison most often supplies its partners with ready-made devices. P34A80 solid state drives are one of those and can be considered typical consumer-class solutions. The passport characteristics seem to be not bad, but the declared speeds are achievable only in scenarios with the maximum possible command queue (when reading) or when writing small portions of information (since the SLC cache of this device is static and small). For the 512 GB model, we are talking about a fast write of only 20 GB. It is worth noting that only versions with 256 and 512 GB on board are one-sided in this extensive family, i.e. older representatives of Silicon Power P34A80 are most likely unsuitable for installation in a laptop.

Main advantages:

  • attractive price tags.
Minuses:
  • real speed characteristics are much more modest than those declared;
  • double-sided mounting for 1 and 2 TB drives.

It is built on the Phison reference platform, the firmware is also not its own, so it should not differ from the “clones” in any way. Due to the competitive price, this is a pretty good buy. Although the HD Tune Pro showed a flat recording schedule at an average of 995MB/s, in real applications the speed drops quite quickly to 300MB/s. And this is a pretty good result for this class of drives.

Best Fast NVMe SSDs (PCIe Gen 4)

Western Digital WD Black SN850

If you are looking for the highest performance SSD, you should consider options in the segment of NVMe drives with support for the fourth generation of the PCI Express standard. And not formal, as it is implemented in models with Phison E16 or Silicon Motion SM2267 controllers, but full-fledged. At the time of this writing, only Samsung and Western Digital (SanDisk) have “honest” controllers. Moreover, due to the rate of the first company on the maximum unification of the production process, as consumer-level drives, it is now adapting server solutions that were originally focused on parallel processing of requests from many queues. According to WD marketers, their controller for PCIe Gen 4 was developed with an eye on desktop loads and, at least in part, this can be trusted, insofar as models from the Black SN850 line outperform their direct competitors in almost all disciplines. Or maybe it’s all about 96-layer memory with lower latency (Samsung uses 128-layer).

Main advantages:

  • best performance among PCIe Gen 4 SSDs;
  • advanced dynamic SLC caching;
  • low latency memory chips;
  • there are versions with a heatsink (for example, WDS500G1XHE) and without.
Minuses:

Samsung 980 PRO

As mentioned above, in the 980 PRO line, the company used its achievements for server products, and this moment did not have the best effect on the new SSDs. The bottom line is that such specialization provides for the simultaneous maintenance of several dozen queues, which is typical for data center drives. At the same time, speed is not its strong point, which is bad for non-pipelinable small-block operations that prevail in user requests to the disk. In other words, you won’t see any of the benefits of PCI Express 4G unless you use Samsung 980 PRO drives for data-intensive tasks. As options, you can consider gaming application (fast loading of new locations) or professional video editing. Note that, yielding to their direct competitors from WD in performance, South Korean solid-state drives outperform them in the absence of friezes during background cleaning of “garbage”. Finally, there is a reason to once again point out the worst speed characteristics of the youngest model. If for the «five hundred» the maximum linear write speed of 5000 MB / s is declared, then for the MZ-V8P250BW this figure is much more modest — only 2700 MB / s.

Main advantages:

  • very high read/write linear speeds with deep request queues;
  • the controller has enough power for all tasks, including background memory cleaning;
  • moderate heating.
Minuses:
  • poor performance in everyday scenarios;
  • expensive.

Best Solid State Drives for Computer (PCI Express Slot)

Plextor PX-256M9PeY

If the predecessor used the “good old” MLC, now here is the ubiquitous TLC 3D. Well, this technology has really been brought to a state where its use can no longer be called a sure sign of exclusively budget low-resource models.

Now the user has access to not 900 MB / s of write speed, but all 1000. Is there a small difference? How to say — when recording a volume of several gigabytes, this will already be noticeable. Well, an increase in read speed by 1000 MB/s at once (from 2000 to 3000) will definitely be noticeable, especially in the latest AAA games when choosing the maximum quality of textures, which have long been measured in tens of gigabytes.

In short, Plextor continues to improve its products — if you have been thinking about purchasing an SSD in a PCIe slot, then why not do it already? (Hint — modified BIOSes for booting from such SSDs can be found on the Internet even for boards that did not receive official support for bootable NVMe drives.

Main advantages:

  • Decent resource
  • Moderate operating temperatures with normal chassis ventilation
  • Good read/write speed
Minuses:
  • On older operating systems and motherboards, you need a familiar admin tambourine to install as a boot
