The best adhesives for light vinyl wallpaper

Quelyd Super Express

Adhesives have been produced under the Quelyd brand for almost a hundred years, so we can say that the French know their business. Glue «Super Express» in their line is positioned as universal, that is, it is suitable for both paper and vinyl wallpapers — but only for light ones, which must be taken into account when buying. One 250-gram pack of dry glue, depending on the intended type of work, will be enough in different ways: for example, if you plan to prime a porous wall first, then the pack can be diluted in 11 liters of water, covering up to 90 square meters. For paper wallpaper, you already need to take 7-8 liters of water, for vinyl — no more than six liters. The glue is diluted quickly, without lumps, the solution turns out to be almost transparent, which makes it somewhat difficult to work, but the glue is compatible with light wallpaper without restrictions.

The final setting of the adhesive will take no more than two days (in a cold and damp room under the vinyl). Its basis is modified starch, which, of course, is safe and environmentally friendly, but it immediately raises the question: what about mold and fungus, which are just such “environmentally friendly” materials and love? Well, in general, the antifungal effect of Quelyd is well expressed, and in most cases it will be enough. Naturally, in a humid room, and even already affected by a fungus or mold, before sticking the wallpaper, you need to thoroughly “etch” the surface with an antiseptic, here the additives in the glue composition can no longer cope.

Main advantages:

  • Ease of preparation and application
  • Quite cost effective
  • Good antiseptic properties
Minuses:
  • Leaky packaging: if stored improperly, it can cake into a «stone»

The glue is good, in my sense of smell — odorless, vinyl holds without problems, so I liked it.

The best adhesives for heavy vinyl wallpaper, including non-woven backing

KLEO TOTAL Universal

I immediately want to complain about the strange labeling of products: try to guess offhand how the “Total 70” glue differs from “Total 10”? But nothing — it’s the same glue, just the first package is designed for 70 square meters of surface, and the second — for 10. So do not get confused with these designations, which stores love to put right into the name on the price tag.

The glue is made on the basis of methylcellulose and, according to the manufacturer, it does not have an upper bar in terms of the specific weight of the pasted wallpaper — that is, it can be safely used with heavy vinyl or non-woven wallpaper. True, in this case, the «seventieth» pack is enough for no more than 50 square meters of area. The antifungal properties of the glue are good in themselves (after all, methylcellulose is not as “tasty” as starch), but they are also additionally enhanced with additives. So, in general, glue for vinyl wallpaper can be recommended: it holds well, does not leave stains, and is convenient to use.

Main advantages:

  • Drying speed
  • Strength
  • No stains on light wallpaper
Minuses:
  • When working with vinyl, the drying speed must be borne in mind: at the maximum concentration, the glue dries even quickly, do not hesitate

The glue is durable and at a reasonable price, the wallpaper holds as it should.

Moment Vinyl

Something, but the Moment trademark is well known in our country, and not only among fans of plastic bags (although, as they would say now, it was made memetic by the “inappropriate” use). Specifically, Vinyl glue in the line, as you might guess, was created specifically for working with vinyl wallpaper and foamed vinyl, inexpensive and quite reliable. The basis of the glue is a mix of modified starch (the largest share) and methylcellulose: on the one hand, it is cheaper, on the other hand, without loss in efficiency. A half-kilogram pack is designed to prepare a volume of glue that is enough for 50-60 square meters. The color of the resulting solution is light beige, so glue will not be the best choice for thin and light wallpapers, but in general it has no particular restrictions on its use.

It is worth noting that the manufacturer decided not to produce a universal adhesive for vinyl and non-woven wallpaper: for working with non-woven wallpaper, the line has its own composition, which, as you might guess, is called «Moment Non-woven». With an equal ratio to water, the “non-woven” glue is less viscous, but an attempt to simply dilute the “vinyl” glue harder for the non-woven fabric will not work: it will not stick well.

Main advantages:

  • Low price
  • Good antifungal properties
  • Sufficiently high quality
Minuses:
  • Narrow specialization: this is just an example of glue, which is not worth buying for non-woven wallpaper

Cheap and cheerful, in principle, for which we love a variety of «Moments».

Quelyd Special interlining

The glue, as the name implies, is specialized — it is designed for non-woven wallpaper, including heavy vinyl on a non-woven backing, non-woven wallpaper for painting. For paper wallpapers, on the contrary, it is definitely not recommended by the manufacturer. The basis, like other adhesives of this company, is modified starch. The estimated area for a 450-gram pack is up to 55 square meters.

The glue will have to be stirred longer than many, it will “stand” until it is ready in about 10 minutes. You need to pay attention to this when working with any «starch», since sufficient swelling of the starch particles, the duration of which differs for different varieties, directly affects the effectiveness of the adhesive. Here the fraction is quite large, so the long swelling time is not surprising — the same «Quelyd Super Express» comes to «working condition» several times faster.

Ready glue — almost transparent, pasty. Therefore, it is comfortable to work with heavy wallpaper, they do not tend to crawl away immediately, there will be enough time to correct the installation. But as a minus, you will have to come to terms with the increased consumption: without a stuffed hand, the pack will end much earlier than the instructions promise.

Main advantages:

  • Good strength
  • There are no problems with correction and expulsion of air — the glue does not “get up” quickly
Minuses:
  • Usually higher consumption
  • Labor intensity of preparation

Glue is good for heavy wallpapers; for light ones, you can choose brands that are more convenient to use.

The best adhesives for vinyl wallpaper with indicator

Quelyd Vinyl-indicator

What is the easiest thing to go wrong when applying wallpaper paste to a wall without much experience? Yes, in the application itself — its transparency here plays its cruel joke. Therefore, just for “novice repairmen”, indicator adhesives, which are clearly visible on the wall immediately after application, but “darken” as they dry, will be a good choice.

«Vinyl Indicator» is positioned as a universal adhesive — it will go under plain paper, and under heavy vinyl. It is prepared quickly, it takes about three minutes for the starch to swell, but it has enough “seizing” time to correct its mistakes. True, the expense when working with vinyl will be solid: one 150-gram pack of glue is enough for no more than 25 square meters.

Main advantages:

  • Versatility
  • Reliability
  • Good antifungal properties
Minuses:
  • Weak indicator shade
  • High consumption

Not to say that it is so bright when applied, but it is still more convenient than ordinary transparent adhesives.

PUFAS EURO 3000 Vinyl with indicator

The German company, “the first product of which was waste paper” (seriously, the company’s Russian-language website claims so), offers a somewhat non-standard glue — in addition to starch, it also contains polyvinyl acetate, and even lemon flavor. The glue is universal, it can be used with both paper and vinyl wallpapers, however, with one “but”: for the heaviest wallpapers, the manufacturer recommends adding a 750-gram can of PUFAS Bordürenkleber — border (!) glue to the glue pack. So, for every firefighter, we’ll rather classify it as “average” in terms of strength: there’s no point in messing with “cocktails”, there are enough adhesives for heavy wallpaper on sale.

Glue consumption is average: three hundred grams is enough for a maximum of 40 square meters, if we talk about heavy wallpaper. But, since they would have decided to use it with lighter wallpaper, then it’s worth counting on that way fifty “squares”. It will be ready for use in about five minutes, it is applied conveniently, the time for correction leaves quite good. So, in general, it can be recommended — but with the specified reservation on applicability.

Main advantages:

  • Quite cost effective
  • Decent adhesion
Minuses:
  • When choosing glue for heavy wallpaper, it is better to choose a different brand — it will somehow be calmer

The glue is good, the consumption is moderate (and inexpensive itself), the dye discolors without problems, it is not visible under the wallpaper.

Tytan Euro-Line Vinyl with indicator

The Polish manufacturer does not indulge in technical information: the mention of “German-made starches” and “seven or eight rolls on one pack of glue” is clearly not enough. Which rolls, for example? For heavy and light wallpapers, the concentration of glue dilution is needed differently, so for such an “informative” technical description on the official website, you can put a strong deuce. Fortunately, at least on the top of the pack they still wrote that with heavy vinyl wallpaper, a 250-gram pack should be enough for an area of up to 37 square meters. In reality, it usually turns out less: glue at a given ratio to water turns out to be thick, it is consumed quickly.

In fairness, the adhesive copes with its direct duties well, taking into account the price of the pack, it is quite profitable. Its antifungal properties are not bad, so you can recommend it: for your money, it will give a good result.

Main advantages:

  • Efficiency
  • Good antiseptic properties
Minuses:
  • High consumption

A decent budget wallpaper glue with an indicator, it works fine, you always have time to correct the wallpaper in case of an error.
