The best European ax manufacturers

Fiskars

The Finnish company is perhaps the closest thing to becoming a household name, like Xerox, with something, and this brand is unequivocally associated with axes. And now the company, founded back in the 17th century, produces a huge variety of good axes, for which it provides a 25-year guarantee: both for light tourist models and for professional lumberjack tools.

The firm prefers to make the axes themselves from high-carbon steel with double zone hardening — they cut perfectly and sharpen well. To protect against corrosion and facilitate the removal of a stuck ax, this steel receives an anti-friction coating — «Fiskars» axes are always easy to recognize by the characteristic black color of the head. On the handle, in cases where every gram counts, there is fiberglass with SoftGrip shock-absorbing pads — the splitters have natural hickory wood (but with FiberCompTM proprietary protection that does not allow the ax to break so easily).

Branded plastic covers are another characteristic feature of Fiskars axes: they protect the blade, do not require maintenance, are durable and cling well to tourist equipment (if we are talking about tourist axes, of course). And at the same time, for its level of quality, the company also offers attractive prices to everyone — you must admit, for a high-quality ax that will last for decades, and during this time it will only rub the inscriptions and coating on the metal, 3-4 thousand is inexpensive . By the way, if you want to make a gift to an avid hiker or hunter, pay attention to Fiskars gift sets — they usually include a tourist ax, a knife and a universal branded sharpener in a beautiful package.

Main advantages:

  • Material quality
  • 25-year warranty upon registration on the manufacturer’s website
  • Good selection of models
Minuses:
  • Is it an anti-friction coating that wears off over time
Models in the line:
  • Fiskars
    — tourist ax Fiskars X5
  • FISKARS X7

    — tourist ax

  • FISKARS X17

    — cleaver

  • FISKARS X10

    — carpenter’s ax

  • FISKARS X25

    — ax for chopping wood

  • and etc.

If you need to buy a quality ax «once and for all» — then you yourself know that the name should have 7 letters, and the first one is F.

Husqvarna

Let’s continue about Scandinavia — and how can we not mention Husqvarna? Those, of course, «made a name» more with gas tools (although they made very good guns, and they still make motorcycles), but they are not going to forget about axes with their 350-year history. And, unlike other (and very good) Swedish manufacturers like Gransfors Bruks or Hultafors, whose products in Russia still have to be looked for, or Hults Bruk, which we don’t sell at all, we don’t have a shortage of Husqvarna axes.

There are 12 models of axes in the current line of the company. Five of them with their own alphanumeric indexes are assembled on a polyamide ax handle with special overlays to improve the grip — from the short «hike» H900 to the 2.8-kg sledgehammer S2800. High-quality steel with an anti-friction coating is used — in general, this line can be a worthy competitor to the reference Fiskars (but, alas, without a quarter-century guarantee — and at the same price level this becomes a serious argument in favor of Fiskars).

But the line of axes on wooden ax handles does not have model markings as such (only in-catalogue indexes), but these axes flaunt deliberately “bare” metal and the stamps “Forged by hand in Sweden”. If the “plastic” Husqvarnas are definitely workhorses, then the “wooden” ones are more of a fashion accessory, if we can talk about axes that way. Here it is worth noting that specially rough hand forging is common for Swedish high-class ax manufacturers, who, in the same way, indicate the fact of this very hand forging on the ax. But, if a good hand-forged Husqvarna ax will cost you around 4-5 thousand, then, for example, for a tourist ax from Gransfors Bruks you will have to pay 10 thousand more — so Husqvarna offers a completely budgetary way to touch the traditional Swedish «handmade» .

Main advantages:

  • Good combination of quality and price
  • Good selection of models
  • Prevalence in sale due to a wide network of company stores
Minuses:
  • Less interesting warranty terms than Fiskars
Models in the line:
  • Husqvarna
    — tourist ax Husqvarna H900
  • Husqvarna 5769264-01
    — carpenter’s ax
  • Husqvarna Universal Ax A1400
    — ax-sledgehammer
  • Husqvarna 5769267-01
    — cleaver
  • and etc.

I took a cleaver six years ago along with a chainsaw — comfortable, pricks what you need, made with high quality, what else do you want?

gardena

The German company, now, however, owned by the same Husqvarna, cannot boast of a rich history — it was founded after the Second World War in Ulm. You yourself understand that now the owner does not need “intra-brand” competition, therefore axes produced under the Gardena brand now cost less than Husqvarna products — in Russia we are talking about amounts from two to two and a half thousand rubles. It is worth considering that the most affordable models of Gardena axes are made in China, the more expensive models are made in the Czech Republic, so we still classify this brand as a European manufacturer with a reservation.

However, even the «Chinese» axes are very interesting for them — like the more eminent brothers, they have a two-component plastic handle, ergonomic and well shock-absorbing. The metal is covered with anti-friction material. We especially note that since 2018 the guarantee for Gardena axes has been extended to 25 years — but only if the axes are used for personal purposes, and not in professional practice.

By the way, the 900B model is interesting — on the one hand, it is a classic “hiker” with a short ax handle, on the other hand, it is a completely functional sledgehammer due to the presence of a wide heel on the back of the head. Of course, this made the ax somewhat larger and heavier than a typical one-handed camping ax, but while maintaining normal “transportability”, it made it even more versatile.

Main advantages:

  • Attractive prices with good quality
  • 25 year warranty, albeit with conditions
Minuses:
  • Weak Teflon coating
Models in the line:
  • gardena
    — sledgehammer GARDENA 900B
  • GARDENA 2800S
    — ax for chopping wood
  • GARDENA 1400A
    — carpenter’s ax
  • and etc.

I have been using the cleaver of this brand for a long time, I am satisfied with the quality — it performs its functions, sits well in the hands, keeps sharpening.

Top American Ax Manufacturers

Gerber Legendary Blades Inc.

The Oregon company, founded in 1939 by the Gerber family (as you can see by the name, they modestly had no shortage), now belongs to Fiskars — and a couple of models of Gerber axes can be seen from a mile away, because both the design and even the colors are almost identical . It is worth noting that Gerber’s production is now located in Taiwan, therefore (like other brands from the United States represented on our market) we still conditionally attribute the company to «Americans». That, however, does not prevent the company from offering a lifetime warranty on its products.

The advantages of Gerber axes are good ergonomics, high-quality materials. True, the author personally would still prefer Fiskars or Husqvarna — they are now cheaper with us.

Gerber products are positioned more as “outdoor” — it’s not for nothing that there are “combo models” in the ax line, in which either a saw (Gerber Gator Combo Axe II) or a knife (Gerber Gator Combo) is hidden in the handle: why take up extra space with a tool, if it fits well in the hatchet? And, of course, Gerber would not be Gerber without releasing the Bear Grylls “signature” model of the “survival ax” on the market with an atypical design for modern “hikers” — this is a fulltang, the all-metal handle of which is recessed in a polypropylene lining. And, despite the small size, this hatchet, made of stainless steel 3Cr13MoV, is quite functional.

Main advantages:

  • Good quality
  • Interesting tourist models in the line
  • Lifetime warranty from the manufacturer
Minuses:
  • Prices in Russia are less interesting compared to Scandinavian competitors

I took a combo version with a hacksaw for trophy-raids — a convenient and useful thing, made firmly.

cold steel

An American company (although locating production from China and India to Japan and Italy) cannot be blamed for the poor quality of products (as, alas, praised for affordable prices at current rates). But their design has always been ahead of the point: yes, Cold Steel axes immediately catch the eye against the background of utilitarian «Scandinavians», but they cannot boast of real advantages.

Of course, if you are buying an ax for throwing, then it makes sense to be interested in a tomahawk from Cold Steel. But in search of a convenient practical solution for hiking or chopping firewood near the house, you can flip through the catalog — and still not find anything. So, alas, we cannot give this company a high rating.

Main advantages:

  • A wide range of axes up to the most «unconventional»
  • Quality of materials and assembly
Minuses:
  • The impracticality of almost the entire line of axes at high prices
Models in the line:
  • cold steel
    — travel ax Cold Steel 90PTH
  • Cold Steel Trench Hawk
    — tactical ax
  • Cold Steel Viking Hand Axe
    — tomahawk
  • Cold Steel Trail Boss Ax
    — universal ax
  • and etc.

Done well, but mainly based on fans of the brand.

The best Russian ax manufacturers

PAO Trud

We decided not to include “Russian-type” trademarks that simply supply products from Chinese factories under their own brand in today’s rating: at least development with production outsourcing is one thing, and a typical “buy and sell” of the same type of products under different names is another. Therefore, let’s start with a horse-drawn, but really Russian company, estimating its age (albeit with more than one reorganization) from a pre-revolutionary workshop in the village of Vacha near Nizhny Novgorod. Her specialty is an affordable working tool without any tricks, but with triple-digit prices: much cheaper. Availability is also a good demand: the company produces its axes in millions of copies.

However, the manufacturer also has more expensive models that are listed in the catalog on the website as products of “manual” rather than “mechanical” assembly (the term is strange — it is unlikely that robots put a head on an ax there). But all of them are united by an extremely simple design — an ax handle made of cheap wood with a forged head mounted on a wooden or metal wedge. The quality of the steel is average, and you should not expect special ergonomics from these axes: having tried Fiskars in the case, you are unlikely to want to return to the ax from Vacha. But given such a difference in prices, it’s even stupid to complain about steel or ergonomics: in the end, you can even buy an ax for five hundred rubles literally “at once”.

Main advantages:

  • Extremely affordable prices
  • Good selection of models
Minuses:
  • Expected at this price level

An ordinary working ax, as in the village and got used to it from childhood: cheap and cheerful.

OOO Izhstal-TNP

The Izhevsk company, which is a subsidiary of PJSC Izhstal (as you might guess, consumer goods in the name stands for “consumer goods”) also produces axes according to the “cheap and cheerful” principle. Steel 60G on the head with zone hardening of the blade, birch ax — that’s the whole recipe for an inexpensive working tool.

The circulation of the company is also not small — almost a million a year, the production of 13 models of axes has been mastered, from «compacts» for tourists and hunters to cleavers. Of course, modern axes with a fiberglass or polyamide handle are lighter and more ergonomic — but here we also recall the price level, with which the Chinese cannot argue too much.

Main advantages:

  • Low prices with good quality
Minuses:
  • Inevitably primitive design and cheap materials

For a long time I dragged an Izhevsk hatchet on campaigns — yes, it’s heavy, and for obvious reasons he doesn’t like water, but this is the case when it’s not even a pity to lose.

The best Chinese ax manufacturers

Ganzo

Turning to the Chinese manufacturers of axes, one involuntarily thinks — “who is not a Chinese now?”. Therefore, here, of course, Chinese manufacturers, whose products are sold all over the world under many «supposedly local» brands, we will not mention — and why, when there are well-known companies that do not hide their «Chineseness»? And among them, undoubtedly, the most popular in our country is Ganzo — albeit primarily with knives.

The Chinese would not be themselves, they would not have a noticeable “copy-paste”. Hmm, a multi-tool ax with a hacksaw inside the handle? Yes, somehow it suspiciously resembles «Gerber» — but it’s cheaper, and even with a flint as a bonus inside the case. The metal is 3Cr13 steel, quite typical for a Chinese instrument, due to alloying with chromium, it also has good resistance to corrosion. The handle is reinforced nylon.

Well, we, in principle, do not mind the fact that the Chinese like to copy successful solutions: if a replica can compete with the original in terms of functionality and quality, but it also costs less, then why not?

Main advantages:

  • Good value for money
  • Official sales in Russia, and not just «our everything» -Aliexpress
Minuses:
  • Small selection of models

Their knives and multi-tools are not bad, I took an ax for the sake of interest — and what, it’s a completely successful model, and it’s made with high quality.
