The best modular helmets

Shoei Neotec II

The Shoei Neotec II Helmet is a (sadly more expensive) evolution of the well-known premium Neotec helmet. Well, they have already managed to test it in practice, and let’s say right away — this tourist modular is definitely worthy of the first place in the ranking of the best helmets for a motorcycle.

Compared to the first generation, aerodynamics have improved significantly, the helmet has become quieter and more comfortable at high speeds. Its innards are designed specifically for the installation of the Sena SRL motorcycle headset: now you do not have to deal with pressure on the ears, as is the case with helmets, where headsets were not considered during the design. Also in the helmet, the fixation of the “jaw” in the raised position has been improved.

«Shell» — from a complex five-layer composite. As a result, the helmet is not much inferior to the integrals in terms of strength, although it inevitably became heavier. The lowering built-in tinted glass is, by modern standards, already a “must-have” for a tourist modular. In general, you can safely get ready for the road — although with our roads a cross-country helmet is often more relevant …

Main advantages:

  • Low noise
  • Durable composite material
  • Reliable clamp «jaw»
  • Preparing for a headset
Minuses:
  • Non-transformable «stuffing»

I know firsthand the first neoteque, but for this season I decided to take the second one — definitely more comfortable, especially at speeds.

Shark Evo One 2

Another update of the famous series, this time from Shark. The new Evo-One has retained a very specific kinematics of the “jaw” movement, which does not rise up, but retracts behind the helmet, actually turning it into a full-fledged open one does not “sail”, so the Evo-One 2 as a modular is definitely more convenient than most.

True, the structure of the “shell” is no longer based on a composite, the helmet is molded from thermoplastic. Of course, this had a positive effect on the weight and price, but in terms of “indestructibility” with top carbon helmets, it is expected to not argue.

Although the visor glass here does not have a direct kinematic connection with the «jaw», a convenient feature has been implemented: the visor can be raised and lowered when the «jaw» is moved. With the visor raised, the possibility of protecting the eyes remains — the helmet is equipped with an oversized sunscreen that does not leave light «slits» at the edges of the field of view.

Main advantages:

  • Original and very comfortable «jaw» design
  • Refined aerodynamics
Minuses:
  • Only two shell sizes in the range

The best touring helmet for the money — the jaw leans back not only for drinking and smoking, but you can ride like that.

LS2 FF900 VALIANT II

31 years ago, Arthur Liao, with $ 500 in his pocket, opened a plastic products manufacturing company … and in 2021, the Chinese company Jiangmen Pengcheng Helmets Ltd, using the LS2 trademark, is already a very serious player in the motorcycle helmet market, especially since the design and development for more than a decade since moved from China to Barcelona. Valiant II, in turn, is last year’s update of the very successful LS2 FF399 Valiant helmet: the helmet has become more compact (which is important for modulars due to their more complex design), ventilation and noise isolation have improved.

The shell of the helmet is made of high-strength KPA plastic, the inner shock-absorbing layer is made of polystyrene foam. The helmet has a full certification according to the European standard ECE 22.05 and weighs 1700 grams — for a modular, this is a very good result. External visor — quick-release, reinforced polycarbonate with UV protection. The inner darkened visor has an automatic lifting when the jaw is lowered, but it does not always work perfectly — sometimes it has to be helped by a hand, which, of course, should be attributed rather to the disadvantages of the design.

Be that as it may, for its price the helmet is quite interesting — both comfortable and well calculated in terms of aerodynamics, the raised jaw “sails” slightly. Well, of course, if you follow the speed limit.

Main advantages:

  • Compact size and moderate weight
  • Well thought out ventilation
  • Good aerodynamics
Minuses:
  • The automatic raising of the inner visor is not ideal in design

I bought it last season, so two have already been skated. It is very comfortable on a cruiser, including with a raised jaw at speeds up to 100-110. And why on a cruiser more in the city, then?

Airoh Phantom S

Our review of the best Airoh Phantom S motorcycle helmets continues. The Italians presented their moderate-budget modular a long time ago, so they already got to know him well in Russia. The basis of the helmet is a thermoplastic shell, which is made very competently — the helmet is certified according to European standards in both jaw positions.

The design itself is classic — with a quick-release outer visor and an additional inner visor, without any «bells and whistles». The viewing angle from the helmet cannot be called narrowed, control of the road will not require you to turn your head once again. There is preparation for installing a Bluetooth headset.

The helmet sits comfortably on its “own” head size, without unnecessary pressure or the feeling that something under the removable “comfort” protrudes unnecessarily. Noise isolation is also not bad — in the closed position, out of habit, even some acoustic discomfort is possible, but you get used to it quickly.

However, it should be noted that the build quality of these helmets is somewhat of a lottery: although many owners have been satisfied with their helmets for several seasons, a small number had problems with assembly, as they say, “out of the box” (in particular, in the attachment of the external visor). But where to go — the line is something «younger», with inevitable savings.

Main advantages:

  • Good aerodynamics
  • Effective noise isolation
  • Ability to use with a headset
  • Pinlock and nose shield included
Minuses:
  • I would like plastic to be “more serious”

A normal helmet, at least for tourist trips without much extreme sports and super speeds.

The best integral helmets

AGV K-5S

If, when choosing the best helmet-integral, you don’t get into the jungle of the premium segment (and the top-end integrals from AGV, like the Pista GP RR, which is indigestible for the Russian ear, already cost well over 100 thousand rubles), then, perhaps, we will stop at the line of helmets K- 5 S: This is the latest series of premium helmets, not homologated for racing but made with motorsport technology, available in a full range of sizes and colors.

However, of course, the main thing is in the design. The helmet, which weighs 1.43 kg, is made of a carbon fiber-glass fabric composite, under which the EPS foam forms the internal shape. “Comfort” is not only removable (it goes without saying, of course), but also complex in structure: the cheek pads are from Ritmo “fresh effect fabric”, the main part is from Shalimar, and the neck roll is additionally treated with water-repellent impregnation. The manufacturer emphasizes that in this whole construction there is not a single protruding seam, and the helmet, whatever one may say, is really very comfortable on the head, without causing discomfort even during long trips. Prepared for the installation of a motorcycle headset.

The horizontal viewing angle is very good for an integral — 190 degrees, without overlapping peripheral vision. Considering that integrals of this class are preferred by owners of sports bikes, where any little thing at the edge of the field of view can be important after just a split second, a large visor is definitely important. The helmet has an internal shaded visor, which, like the external one, is made quick-release.

The aerodynamics of the helmet, with its pronounced spoiler and wedge jaw, is also great for high speeds — the very ones from which the Rules of the Road begin to turn green and roll up into a tube themselves. Well … we understand why people buy sports bikes? However, unlike the «purely sporty» helmets of MotoGP pilots, which do not change the «shrimp position» throughout the race, the K-5 S is better optimized for high seating.

Main advantages:

  • Lightweight and extremely durable shell
  • Wide viewing angle
  • Efficient and well-formed foam
  • No discomfort for extended wear
Minuses:
  • Not very convenient control of the front ventilation — it seems to be a trifle, but when applying for the premium segment, annoying

The helmet is a solid five — it sits on the head like a native, the ventilation is adequate at all speeds and different weather.

Icon Airframe Pro Construct

Icon traditionally adheres to a deliberately brutal style, but at the same time without sacrificing quality. The Airframe Pro Construct motorcycle helmet complies with the requirements of DOT FMVSS 218 (USA), ECE 22-05 (Europe) and PSC (Japan) standards, its composite “shell” is as strong as possible, and the internal “filling”, which has a special bactericidal coating, effectively extinguishes and distributes impact energy. As for ventilation, nine channels allow you to adjust the helmet to any conditions — the benefit is that the visor is made to be fog-free.

By the way, about the visor: thanks to the Rapid release system, it can be replaced with just one movement of the hand — for example, take off the daytime visor with tinted glass for evening rides and put on the usual one. At the same time, it is equipped with a strong locking mechanism in the selected position, which is held even in spite of strong air pressure.

The «stuffing» of the helmet is modular, consisting of five elements. In total, 27 different combinations of internal design are possible, which means that the helmet can be perfectly adapted to almost any head. Combined with the low weight, this allows the helmet to be as comfortable as possible.

It is designed primarily for the «shrimp» landing of the owners of sports motorcycles. Therefore, the back was designed with the expectation of a large deviation of the neck, but no one would interfere with accepting a closer to the classic fit.

Main advantages:

  • Strong «shell»
  • Efficient and quiet ventilation
  • Possibility of flexible adaptation to the shape of the head
Minuses:
  • High price
  • Design, as usual with Icon, for an amateur

The helmet is as comfortable as possible for the integral, even on long distances. Expensive but worth it.

Airoh Valor

The choice of designs for this helmet can be confusing, as well as their names: for example, in the coloring of Eclipse Orange Matt, there is just very little orange — one thin strip! But you can choose for every taste — and, regardless of the color, we will have in our hands a full-fledged, albeit entry-level, sports helmet that has a full five out of five races according to the SHARP system (crash tests of the Ministry of Transport of England), in addition to the standard certification for ECE 22.05.

The shell is molded from thermoplastic for the sake of cost reduction, but, as you can see, it still performs its task perfectly. The weight of the helmet is 1.4 kg, it should not cause discomfort during prolonged wear. The ventilation system is made eight-channel, very efficient and flexible in terms of adjustments. There is no additional internal visor, so it is also important that the helmet allows you to comfortably wear sunglasses.

What is not entirely successful in a helmet is noise. Of course, it depends on the fit on the motorcycle, and on the design of the fairing, and on the height of the driver — but, be that as it may, complaints about distinct aerodynamic noises after a “hundred” can be heard. Therefore, we would advise, if possible, to “try on” the helmet on your motorcycle and with your riding style.

Main advantages:

  • Durability and good shock absorption
  • Sufficient wearing comfort
  • Well designed ventilation
Minuses:
  • Inconvenient extraction of «comfort»
  • High aerodynamic noise possible

I really liked the helmet for its price — well, five SHARP stars warm the soul a little, safety is never superfluous.

HJC i 70

One of the most popular motorcycle helmets in the middle price segment. Of course, this is no longer a handmade composite, like Icon, but the price is much more affordable — while polycarbonate also provides more than decent strength. In addition, there is no need to change visors in the “day-night” mode — traditionally, HJC builds darkened “goggles” into the helmet that can be released or removed with one movement of the hand, leaving the transparent visor “permanent”. The thing is actually very convenient, which is why the author, by the way, at one time preferred the helmet of this particular brand.

You don’t have to worry about the design either — the company offers as many as 24 colors, from simple ones (yellow, white) to multi-color ones with a complex pattern structure. So there is an option for almost every taste. The lining, although devoid of modularity, is easily removed for washing, its material is “correct” — with good moisture absorption, antibacterial impregnation.

The aerodynamics of the helmet does not make you want to hit the pavement with it for a long time — there is practically no noise, even if all the ventilation ducts are fully opened. So, despite the “yellow” origin (the company itself is Korean, production is located in Korea, Vietnam and China), the helmet came out more than deserving of both a purchase and a place in our rating.

Main advantages:

  • Durable polycarbonate shell
  • Built-in sunglasses
  • Efficient ventilation
Minuses:
  • There is no way to customize the inside of the helmet

The ratio of price and quality is quite at the level, for me personally the helmet is very comfortable.

The best cross-country helmets

Airoh Aviator 2.2

The Italian manufacturer can rightly be proud of the list of awards that athletes have won in their equipment. The 2.2 Aviator sports a lightweight and extremely durable shell made from multiple layers of carbon and Kevlar, laid and glued by hand. Compared to the previous generation, visibility in the peripheral area has been improved, the “chin” structure has been redesigned, and aerodynamics have been improved. The helmet weighs less than a kilogram!

But it is designed by no means only for professional crossmen. Not without reason, the package immediately includes a mount for an action camera: you don’t need to “collective farm” anything, risking losing your GoPro at the most interesting moment of the trip. The helmet is perfectly ventilated, and even if you find a categorical road in the midst of the July heat and tear along it at a speed of a couple of hundred meters per hour, at least your head will not experience discomfort.

The verdict will be simple and expected: in terms of price-quality ratio, we definitely give this helmet the first place in the ranking.

Main advantages:

  • Lightweight but very strong «shell»
  • Efficient ventilation
  • Good aerodynamics
Minuses:
  • Not very comfortable fit

Never been disappointed in the purchase — from competition to pokatushek.

Shoei VFX-WR

According to the manufacturer, it takes almost a week to make each such helmet, and with a large share of manual labor: it’s not for nothing that the price cannot be called democratic. The complex shape of the «shell» is a combination of strength-material and aerodynamics in a recognizable style, the helmet is comfortable at all speeds.

The «jaw» with an aluminum grill provides the rider with normal breathing, reliably protecting from all the «surprises» that are inevitable on the cross-country track. At the same time, it disassembles for cleaning simply and quickly. The helmet pads in the jaw area have the ability to «emergency removal» — just pull the red ribbons, after which the helmet is removed elementarily, even if its owner has lost consciousness and there is a risk of neck damage, when it is better to avoid unnecessary head movements.

In general, the helmet fully corresponds to the declared class — it is completely ready for professional participation in motocross competitions, and does not fail in heavy enduro raids. But at twice the price of the Airoh, we can’t give this helmet the top spot: it’s twice as expensive, but by no means twice as good.

Main advantages:

  • Durable and aerodynamic «shell»
  • Comfortable «interior»
  • Efficient ventilation
  • Easy emergency removal possible
Minuses:
  • High price

Expensive. But in motocross you should not save on equipment: the hospital is more expensive.

The best open face motorcycle helmets

AGV K-5 JET MONO

Taking their popular «road-sports» helmet K-5 (which was later replaced by the upgraded K-5 S), AGV without thinking twice bit off his jaw, making an open Jet Mono using the same technologies. The shell is exactly the same in terms of the material of manufacture: a high-strength composite of carbon and fiberglass, it has a pronounced spoiler with two ventilation outlets in the same way. And it was not made in vain — it would seem that an open helmet is not for high speeds … but with the visor lowered, the helmet suddenly has a very dynamic ride, so owners of sports and touring motorcycles can be of interest. The outer visor itself uses a patented magnetic closing system and does not require a tool for replacement — it is standardly installed transparent, you can additionally buy yellow or darkened. The second of them is unlikely to be needed — the helmet has a built-in internal visor with dimming, which is quite enough in the sun.

The viewing angles of the helmet, as expected with an open design, are excellent. The ventilation system is well thought out, does not raise any complaints about its work. But, of course, we must not forget that the noise here can “wake up” even at moderate speeds, depending on the landing and aerodynamics of the visor: the absence of air flow around the “jaw” inevitably affects, which makes it more difficult for designers to adapt the helmet to different landings and airflow conditions oncoming air.

But be that as it may, one fact speaks well of the quality of the helmet: while competitors are releasing “updates” and “new generations”, the K-5 Jet Mono has been on sale around the world for six years and is not going to retire at all.

Main advantages:

  • Strong yet lightweight composite «shell»
  • Integrated visor
  • Lack of “chatter” and blowing air at speed
  • Efficient ventilation
Minuses:
  • Sensitivity to riding position and motorcycle wind protection
